The Reality

Interntional Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women in the past, present and future. One more occassion for celebrating women power freed of all bonds and inhibations. The past millenium has witnessed revolutionary changes in the status of women from a shy housewife to a confident educated responsible intellegent entity that shares, cares and dare to walk hand in hand with the male counterpart. In the arena of fine arts, women rule - 79 years of age has not mellowed the golden voice of Lata Mangeshkar. On the other hand we have Sania Mirza a 22 year old girl who has ventured where no Indian women had gone before. She planted herself firmly in the annals of Indian sporting history when she became the first Indian women to win the WTA singles title at Hyderabad Open in 2005.
But..................
Every coin has two sides. This might be the better side of the coin. But condition of women in the real world is not the way it is being potrayed. There are many places in India mostly northern India where girl child is being killed even before she steps in this beautiful world.
The reason why girl child is killed, aborted or neglected is mainly because people have a belief that she has to join other family on marriage and also that she needs a dowry. As a Hindu saying puts it, "Raising a daughter is like watering your neighours' garden". I do believe that this is not the condition every where. And I can say this because my parents have looked after us(my sister and me) with all the love and affection they can. For them we are the most precious thing in the whole world.
Breaking the glass ceiling is the need of the hour, in order to promote women power.
So now it upon us how we look at this matter. Do we encourage women power or continue strengthening the glass ceiling.

  2. Hii,
When nature wants to change the people, the first human being who adapt the changes is none other but a woman.
Menal you should proud to be a woman, because what woman can do man can't, simply giving birth to a baby. You as a women community is the progress of society.
Nice blog, and nice attitude to write the same.

  4. well i think that such blogs can really bring an awareness in our society and can stop things like dowry and killing or abortion of a girl child....a simple fact that people dnt understand is that its a woman who gives us birth...and we would have not been in this world without her...i really respect and salute all the women on this "International Women's Day"

  6. That is really a nice article. I appreciate your concern else it has been a topic of political parties in order to nab votes by on the women empowerment and their reservation quota.
I could feel emotions in your blog. Thats the real beauty of this blog.
As we have seen capitulation of present social reformers on this issue, so now responsibilities comes to our shoulders.

Can we produce a campaign for saving girl child ? If you can think for this I am ready for its online marketing.

  9. yes meenal you are right.
we are living in a men dominant culture. i think that's why women are getting what they are deserving. In the men dominant work place it will be very difficult for a man to accept a women in higher post. so first of all we all have to change the attitude of working culture then we can go farther for improvement.

  11. Well, to begin with, glad that u r into writing blogs....
Now, to talk about your blog, there are certain issues that i dont agree with..
Firstly it is not mostly the north India where girl child is aborted..it happens a lot in south too..let me not mention the states..but offcourse it isnt the urban crowd who does this but sumthn which is prevalent in rural India...
Secondly, dont u think this topic is a bit over-rated these days..we all know that we do need to 'encourage women power' and not 'strengthen the glass cieling', as u put it, but how many women are tryin to glide this power into the court of rural Indian women??The bills made, reservations made , the provisions have to implemented in the rural, the grass root level first and then gradually to be brought and flourished in urban division..

  12. @ Prasad i just wanted to say that whatever things i have mentioned are relevant as they are supported by the facts given in the Economist....n though women have been given the power they are not allowed to use it as per their own wish...and so i wrote this blog to showcase the reality
